Land of the Gods

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is known to be the holiest land for the Hindus in India.

It is known as Devbhoomi or the land of the gods. The name Uttarakhand literally means the northern land.

Once a part of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand is well known for its hill stations, trekking tracks, pilgrimages and several mountain adventure activities. Hill stations like Naini, Mussoorie, Dehradun and Kasauni attract hordes of tourists throughout the year. The hill towns of Kasauni and Dehradun are where Ruskin Bond’s timeless stories are set and visits to these towns will make you live the storybooks.

A boat ride across the famous Naini Taal(Lake) is a must while visiting Naini. Other attractions in Uttarakhand include river rafting through the fast flowing rivers, bungee jumping or paragliding, and trekking the Himalayas. Camping along the river sides and bonfires under the open sky are other attractions.

Uttarakhand also offers a wide variety of wildlife, including clouded leopards, snow leopards, tigers and deer. The most famous national parks that offer scenic natural beauty as well as great wildlife safari are the Rajaji national Park and the Jim Corbett National Park. Famous pilgrimage sites include the Gangotri glacier, Kedarnath, Badrinath, and the Tunganath temples, apart from the low lying Haridwar and Hrishikesh.
